Leeds United are one of English football’s most historic and best-supported clubs and as such they’ve made a number of fascinating signings over the years.

Whether it be for Don Revie’s legendary team of the 1970s or Marcelo Bielsa’s thrilling side of the early 2020s, Elland Road has welcomed stars aplenty.

Leeds have not spent as much as England’s richest clubs, owing to their spells in the Championship in recent years, but that doesn’t mean they’ve never splashed the cash.

Below, FootballTransfers runs through the 10 most expensive signings Leeds have made in over 100 years of existence.

10. Diego Llorente – €20m (from Real Sociedad, 2020)

After an injury-hit first season, Diego Llorente eventually became a regular for Leeds in 2021-22, making 31 appearances and scoring three goals.

However, after featuring just 13 times in 2022-23, Llorente joined Roma on loan in January 2023 and he never played for Leeds ever again.

After extending his loan spell with Roma for a second season in 2023-24, the Spaniard returned his homeland when joining Real Betis in a permanent deal in July 2024.

9. Jean-Kevin Augustin – €21m (from RB Leipzig, 2020)

After a six-month loan move to Elland Road, Jean-Kevin Augustin returned to RB Leipzig, but Leeds were ordered to pay €21m for his signature due to their promotion to the Premier League.

He never played for the club again having joined Nantes on a free transfer. Augustin only mustered three games for Leeds on loan anyway, so his signing was a massive mistake.

After joining Basel from Nantes on a Bosman transfer in October 2020, striker Augustin’s contract was terminated by mutual consent in August 2024.

8. Luis Sinisterra – €25m (from Feyenoord, 2022)

Leeds signed winger Luis Sinisterra as a replacement for the mercurial Raphinha, paying Feyenoord a fee of €25m for the Colombia international.

Sinisterra immediately became a crowd favourite, netting three times in his first six games for the club, including an array of long-range stunners.

He scored seven goals in total during his debut Leeds campaign, but he joined Bournemouth on loan in 2023-24 before completing a permanent move the following summer.

7. Rio Ferdinand – €26m (from West Ham, 2000)

Rio Ferdinand made the move to Leeds in November 2000 as not only a record signing for the club, but also as the world’s most expensive defender.

And he certainly lived up to the fee and the remarkable promise he’d shown at West Ham…

In just two years at the club, Ferdinand became an integral part of a team that reached the Champions League semi-finals under David O’Leary.

However, when Leeds were hit by financial turmoil, Ferdinand was eventually sold to fierce rivals Manchester United, where he became a club legend.

6. Daniel James – €29.1m (from Man Utd, 2021)

Signed late on in the 2021 summer transfer window, questions were asked about Leeds’ decision to spend big on a player who struggled at Man Utd.

However, given Daniel James’ age at the time (23), it was felt the Wales international had time on his side and therefore represented a worthwhile investment.

James has gone on to score 25 goals in 145 appearances for the Whites, helping them secure promotion to the Premier League under Daniel Farke in 2024-25.

5. Rodrigo – €30m (from Valencia, 2020)

After scoring just seven goals in 34 games for Valencia in the 2019-20 season, the club-record signing of Rodrigo also raised eyebrows among Leeds supporters.

Unfortunately for the Spain striker, his record in front of goal didn’t improve in his first season in the Premier League, netting just seven goals in 26 league appearances.

However, he bagged 13 in his final season at Leeds, thus he could not be blamed for their relegation that term. Rodrigo subsequently joined Qatari side Al-Rayyan SC in July 2023.

4. Brenden Aaronson – €32.84m (from RB Salzburg, 2022

Leeds smashed their record transfer with the signing of forward Brenden Aaronson from RB Salzburg in the summer of 2022, although this fee has since been eclipsed.

The attacking midfielder netted early on in his Leeds career against Chelsea, repaying some of the hefty outlay, but his influence quickly waned.

After Leeds were relegated to the Championship at the end of that season, the United States international spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan with Union Berlin.

However, since returning to Leeds in the summer of 2024, Aaronson has been superb, not only helping the club return to the Premier League but stay there in 2025-26.

3. Tarik Muharemovic – €37m (from Sassuolo, 2026)

After catching the eye for both Sassuolo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, Leeds loosened the purse strings to sign Tarik Muharemovic in the summer of 2026.

The left-sided centre-back scored his first goal for the club in the 6-3 loss against Chelsea in the third round of the Carabao Cup in September 2026.

2. Georginio Rutter – €40.5m (from Hoffenheim, 2023)

Georginio Rutter arrived in the 2023 January transfer window for a fee that eventually became a club-record thanks to various add-on clauses.

The Frenchman joined from Hoffenheim where he had scored two goals and created two more in 15 Bundesliga outings in the first half of the 2022-23 campaign.

He did not score a single Premier League goal in 11 league appearances for Leeds as they suffered relegation to the Championship that season, but his form improved in the second tier and this convinced Brighton to cough up €46.7m to sign him in August 2024.

1. James Trafford – €46.7m (from Man City, 2026)

Fresh from helping Manchester City win the domestic cup double in Pep Guardiola’s final season as manager, James Trafford joined Leeds in the summer of 2026.

Despite those trophy wins at Wembley Stadium, Trafford moved to Leeds in order to earn more first-team minutes, while also boosting his chances of playing for England.

Trafford enjoyed a dream debut for Leeds by keeping a clean sheet in the 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest in their Premier League opener in 2026-27.
