The San Antonio Spurs announced that Victor Wembanyama will miss the rest of the NBA season due to a blood clot in his right shoulder.
The team said in a statement that the condition was discovered when Wembanyama returned to San Antonio after the All-Star Game in San Francisco.
The 21-year-old Wembanyama has been one of the league’s best players this season, averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.6 blocks per game. The Spurs are currently 23-29 and ranked 12th in the Western Conference.
The Frenchman, who was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, is considered one of the greatest basketball talents in recent years, comparable to LeBron James. Last season, he averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3.6 blocks, 1.8 three-pointers and 1.2 steals per game and was named NBA Rookie of the Year.
Wembanyama also became the first player to score at least 1,500 points, 700 rebounds, 250 assists, 250 blocks and 100 three-pointers in a single season.
