Xabi Alonso refused to guarantee that Enzo Fernandez will remain with Chelsea beyond this summer window, though did praise the Argentine for his attitude since returning to training.
Fernandez is still the subject of interest from Manchester City, but that has yet to lead to a formal bid from Enzo Maresca’s side. Chelsea were previously asking for £120million, but the Blues say that expired with the deadline they set for offers last Friday.
When asked whether Fernandez will still be a Chelsea player after deadline day, Alonso avoided answering the question as he said: ‘Enzo is a Chelsea player. He’s a top, top player.
‘He’s training really well since he started 10 days ago with the team, very integrated. We are happy with him and he’s getting ready for Monday.’
When pressed on whether Fernandez had told him he wants to stay, Alonso added: ‘He’s training really well. I see him with a good attitude. That’s what we want. Everyone is trying their best to prepare for the kickoff of the Premier League.’
Chelsea sources have suggested they would now seek more than £120m for Fernandez, should City officially open talks.

The Blues are also considering how long they would have left to find a replacement ahead of the September 1 deadline day. Alex Scott, Adam Wharton and Martin Zubimendi are among those who have been linked as potential signings should Fernandez go.
Meanwhile, Joao Pedro is in line to sign a new contract with Chelsea, and has now been handed the No 9 shirt which belonged to Liam Delap last season.
On the 24-year-old Brazilian, Alonso said: ‘We talk a lot with Joao because he’s not just a great player, he has a great personality, and his development as a great player and as a leader is very noticeable every day and in each game.
‘He has this focus and this desire to have a great season, scoring goals but helping the team. I’m very impressed with his personality and now we need to help him reach his goals.’
