Newcastle United have revived talks to sign Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich.
The Portuguese was initially a back-up option when the club made their £13million move for Pierre Emile Hojbjerg but, as they negotiated with Marseille, Aston Villa stepped up their efforts to sign Palhinha on loan from Bayern Munich.
However, both deals broke down last week and Newcastle have reverted back.
Bayern Munich are clear they do not want to loan the 31-year-old, which is why their sporting director Max Eberl said yesterday they would not deal with Villa.
Palhinha is re-assessing his options which includes offers from Benfica and Sporting. head coach Matthias Jaissle wants an experienced organiser who can help the younger players in his midfield.
Newcastle remain in advanced talks to sign right-back Amar Dedic from Benfica.
Palhinha spent last season with Tottenham, but they opted not to make his temporary spell permanent at the end of the campaign.
Bayern paid close to £50m for the midfielder in July 2024.
