Arsenal are leading the race to sign Brighton midfielder Jack Hinshelwood in a deal that could become one of the Premier League’s great slow-burning bargains.
Although Arsenal’s midfield is stacked with talent such as Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Martin Odegaard and Bruno Guimaraes, Hinshelwood holds a unique skillset and, remarkably, has the potential to surpass all of them.
Although Brighton have put a €60 million (£51m) asking price on the head of the 21-year-old star, down the line this price could look a steal for an unconventional player of immense but untapped talent.
Jack Hinshelwood: A talent like no other
Arsenal are said to have been drawn to Hinshelwood thanks to his ability to fill many different roles across the centre of midfield.
He has operated virtually everywhere down the spine of the team for Brighton – with the notable exception of central defence – and has even appeared as both a left-back and a right-back for Albion.
Ultimately, it was his move into the No.10 role last term that sparked a fine run of form from Fabian Hurzeler’s side that stopped them from being dragged into the relegation battle.
This versatility is a byproduct of Hinshelwood’s outstanding football intelligence, which is far more mature than his years should allow.
It also makes him a thoroughly unique player in the Premier League. Data analytics firm SciSports likens him most closely in style to Conor Gallagher among his Premier League peers, yet there is not an elite player who can truly be compared to him.
Better than Declan Rice? He can be one day
Arsenal have a formidable group of central midfielders, bolstered by the recent addition of Martin Zubimendi, but the attraction of Hinshelwood is clear.
Mikel Arteta’s options in the heart of the park are all 27 or older. These include Martin Odegaard, whose future at the Emirates Stadium has been cast into doubt because of persistent injury concerns. Hinshelwood would offer a natural successor after his impressive shift in role last term.
His potential is enormous, according to SciSports, which rates players using its SciSkill system, attributing a score based on hundreds of in-game data points.
Hinshelwood’s ceiling is 121.2, which is higher than any other Arsenal midfielder, including Declan Rice at 120.8.
Arteta will love the ability to mould the youngster into whatever type of player he feels he needs. His game intellect and technical ability will allow for that.
Meanwhile, Hinshelwood would not arrive at the Emirates and immediately demand a first-team role. Instead, he can grow from the bench, offering Arsenal the type of depth they missed last season as they fell just short in the Champions League.
A steep asking price that could eventually look like a bargain
Brighton are not about to allow Hinshelwood to leave cheaply. Albion are appreciative of his unique skillset, and while that is not yet reflected in terms of his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV), his uniqueness cannot be fully captured by conventional valuation models.
The £51m asking price isn’t based on what Hinshelwood can give Arsenal today. Instead, it reflects the possibility that his intelligence, versatility and development potential eventually make him indispensable.
This is why Hinshelwood is such an intriguing prospect for Arsenal. He’s not a finished product, but a player whose unusual intelligence and versatility offer Arteta immense scope to develop him. If SciSports is right about his ceiling, this deal will look less and gamble and more like one of Arsenal’s smartest investments in recent years.
