Haftar’s top military intelligence official assassinated in Benghazi blast

Major General Fawzi al-Mansouri, commander of the military intelligence department for Libya’s eastern-based forces led by Khalifa Haftar, was killed on Monday when his car was targeted with an explosive device in the al-Hawari area of Benghazi, security official tells Anadolu.

Libyan media reported that the explosion occurred after al-Mansouri left evening prayers, when the car he was travelling in was targeted in the Sayyida Aisha neighbourhood.

Haftar appointed al-Mansouri to head the military intelligence service in May 2024, after he had served as commander of the Sabha military region since August 2021.

Libya remains divided between the UN-backed Government of National Unity in Tripoli, in the West, and a rival eastern administration backed by Khalifa Haftar’s forces. Political and security divisions persist, while efforts to hold national elections and reunify state institutions have stalled.
