Mohamed Salah’s future could finally be resolved, with the former Liverpool attacker ‘inclined’ to accept a €34 million offer that would see him miss out on Champions League football in the season ahead.
Salah left Liverpool in disappointing circumstances, having endured a difficult campaign personally that saw him fall out with former Reds boss Arne Slot.
Having decided to terminate his Anfield contract a year early, the 33-year-old has been associated with moves to the Saudi Pro League and MLS, but the most concrete links have come from Turkey.
Talks with Besiktas may have collapsed, but according to the media, Salah is closing in on an agreement with an alternative Super Lig club.
Yagiz Sabuncuoglu reports that Trabzonspor have offered the Egypt international attacker a two-year contract worth €17 million per season.
He adds that Salah’s agent called the player to transmit the details of the offer and that the forward is “positively inclined” to making the move. However, he will speak to his family before making any final decision.
Salah wants European football
Salah has the ambition of playing at the top level in Europe for as long as possible, which is a key reason he has not completed a move to either Saudi or MLS.
Trabzonspor are not, however, playing in the Champions League this season. Instead, they are in the Europa League, in which they will begin in the play-off round unseeded. Salah could still be registered in time to play in that fixture.
If the deal came to fruition, he would undoubtedly become the club’s biggest star and would count among his team-mates on-loan Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana, World Cup sensation Sidny Lopes Cabral, ex-Manchester City and Atletico Madrid midfielder Stefan Savic as well as former Sheffield United and Rangers defender John Lundstam.
Turkish football ready for another show of strength
Salah’s move to the Super Lig would represent a massive coup for the league, which has gradually been stockpiling impressive signings in recent seasons.
Foremost among these is Victor Osimhen, who left Napoli to sign for Galatasaray when he was being courted by all of Europe’s biggest clubs.
That was a move that sent out a sign about the financial power in Turkish football, and if Salah were to join a club not even playing in the Champions League, it would be further evidence of the strength of the league.
