The cricketing world was left stunned earlier this month when England parted ways with Test head coach Brendon McCullum.
McCullum, who had been in charge of the Test side since 2022, was dismissed following a run of disappointing results and a series of off-field incidents involving several of his key players.
His tenure ended in stark contrast to how it began. Just a few years ago, McCullum was widely credited with transforming England’s Test team through his fearless, ultra-attacking philosophy, which quickly became known as ‘Bazball’.
While that approach produced some memorable victories, consistent success in major series proved far harder to achieve.
The 2025-26 Ashes in Australia perfectly summed up England’s struggles. McCullum’s side were comprehensively beaten 4-1, with the tour also overshadowed by poor off-field behaviour that further damaged the team’s reputation.

The pressure intensified during England’s most recent home series against New Zealand, where captain Ben Stokes announced his retirement from Test cricket midway through the contest.
England went on to lose the series 2-1, and the defeat ultimately proved to be the final chapter of McCullum’s reign.
After weeks of searching for the right successor to lead England into a new era, the ECB this week confirmed the appointment of Stephen Fleming as their new Test head coach.
The former New Zealand captain, whose coaching success has largely come in franchise cricket, has signed a four-year deal through to 2030.
He will begin his reign alongside the returning Joe Root, who has been reinstated as England’s Test captain after several years away from the role.
Despite the fresh start, the bookmakers are not convinced England can immediately end their Ashes drought next summer.
Sky Bet has priced Fleming and Root’s side at 11/8 to reclaim the urn on home soil next summer, while Australia are even-money favourites at 1/1 to win it in enemy territory. A drawn series is considered the least likely outcome at 5/1.
Fleming arrives with an outstanding coaching pedigree and Root brings proven leadership, but with Australia still setting the benchmark in Test cricket, England will have plenty to prove if they are to usher in a successful new chapter.
