War on Iran: Rescuers search for survivors on Qeshm Island after US kills toddler and parents

Footage released by Iranian state broadcaster IRIB on Thursday showed rescue teams clearing rubble as they searched for victims in the Chah-Tango neighbourhood of Qeshm Island, in Hormozgan province, following a US strike.

The attack hit a civilian home, killing three members of the same family: a father, a mother and their two-year-old child.

Two surviving family members, aged seven and nine, were taken to a medical centre for further treatment, according to Iranian officials.

The family were among those killed in a large-scale US assault across Iran overnight on Thursday, launched in retaliation for an Iranian missile strike on a Jordanian-American base.

US President Donald Trump had earlier vowed to “beat the fucking shit” out of Iran following the attack on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in northern Jordan.

The US military has a track record of killing Iranian children and other civilians in the war it launched alongside Israel on 28 February.

Its opening attack of the conflict was a double-tap cruise missile attack on a school in Minab, southern Iran, which killed at least 155 schoolgirls.

In an apparent response to the US attack, Tehran again targeted US interests in Jordan on Thursday.

Explosions were reportedly heard at the Muwaffaq Salti base, although Middle East Eye could not verify the reports.

A Jordanian army spokesperson said five missiles fired from Iran had been “detected, intercepted, and shot down”.

US officials and regional allies have previously claimed to have intercepted Iranian missiles that were later found to have reached their targets.

Also on Thursday, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that countries aiding the US would become targets of Tehran’s retaliatory attacks.

“Countries involved in aiding the aggressor will receive a harsh response if they do not correct their behaviour,” the statement read.

Iran has targeted US interests in Gulf states and Jordan throughout the war.
