Newcastle will head into the 2026-27 season under new management after it was confirmed that Eddie Howe has left the club with immediate effect.
The Magpies enjoyed a hugely successful spell under Howe, qualifying for the Champions League on two occasions, including reaching the last 16 last season.
He also guided Newcastle to their first major trophy in 70 years with victory in the 2025 Carabao Cup final, cementing his place as one of the club’s most successful modern managers.
However, the club now appears to be entering a period of transition. After the departure of Alexander Isak to Liverpool last summer, Newcastle endured a disappointing 2025-26 campaign, finishing 12th in the Premier League – their lowest league finish since 2020-21.

The challenge facing Howe’s successor has only grown this summer. Sandro Tonali, Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier have all departed during the transfer window, while Bruno Guimaraes is also widely expected to leave before the window closes.
With several key players gone and Howe no longer at the helm, there are genuine questions over whether Newcastle could find themselves dragged into a relegation battle this season.
For those expecting the Magpies to struggle, Sky Bet currently prices Newcastle at 12/1 to be relegated from the Premier League.
Although Newcastle’s relegation odds have shortened following Howe’s departure, they are still some way from being among the leading candidates in the market.
As expected, the promoted sides currently dominate the relegation betting, with Hull, Coventry and Ipswich heading the market at 1/5, 4/7 and 8/13 respectively.
However, one of the more surprising names towards the top of the list is Sunderland. Despite an outstanding 2025-26 campaign, which saw them finish seventh in the Premier League and secure European football after promotion, the Black Cats are priced as the fourth favourites for relegation at 11/4 by Sky Bet.
For Newcastle, though, their position in the market reflects the uncertainty surrounding the club rather than an expectation of an immediate collapse.
The loss of Howe, combined with the departure of several influential players, means the Magpies face a crucial summer of rebuilding as they look to avoid being dragged into an unexpected relegation battle.
