Team Nigeria fencer Alex Chizim Aninyei has expressed his eagerness to compete against some of the Commonwealth’s best athletes as he prepares for the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos, describing the tournament as a defining moment in his young career.
The 19-year-old will represent Nigeria in the senior men’s épée event, with the championships bringing together leading fencers from across the Commonwealth in one of the biggest competitions ever staged on Nigerian soil.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Aninyei said the event presents a valuable opportunity to assess his progress against world-class opposition.
“I’m excited to test myself against some of the best fencers in the Commonwealth. It’s a great opportunity to measure my level, gain experience and continue improving,” Aninyei said.
The young épée specialist revealed that his immediate objective is to advance beyond the pool stage before targeting a deep run in the knockout rounds.
“My first goal is to qualify from the pool stage into the direct elimination rounds. From there, I’ll give everything I have to challenge for a medal,” he added.
Aninyei also paid tribute to his coach for playing a crucial role in his development, crediting the technical guidance and demanding training sessions for helping him improve his performances.
The teenager highlighted endurance and stamina as two of the most important physical attributes in épée fencing, explaining that the discipline requires constant movement, quick reactions and sustained concentration throughout each bout.
With Nigeria hosting the prestigious championships, Aninyei believes competing in front of home supporters will provide additional motivation as he seeks to make his mark on the international stage.
The Commonwealth Fencing Championships will offer the promising youngster another important platform to accelerate his development while contributing to Nigeria’s growing ambition of becoming a leading force in fencing across Africa and the Commonwealth.
