Tobi Amusan has failed to defend her women’s 100m hurdles title at the 2026 Commonwealth Games (CWG).
The world record holder struggled to execute her race efficiently, finishing third after clocking 12.60 seconds at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland, on Thursday evening.
Amusan had little problem coming off the blocks. But right after the first few hurdles, her face told a different story with an uncharacteristic grimace. Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton and Megan Simmonds of Jamaica were daylight ahead of her.
Amusan had beaten Charlton to win gold at the 2022 CWG in Birmingham, but she was not able to recover from the insurmountable gap to defeat the Bahamian once again. Charlton took the gold with a 12.33-second finish while Simmonds got the bronze.
Amusan had been hoping to become the first woman to win a third consecutive gold medal in CWG history. She had been undefeated at the event since making her CWG debut in 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia.
The bronze medal is Nigeria’s second laurel in athletics for the night. Earlier, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi became the first Nigerian to win a gold medal in the men’s shot put at CWG.
Team Nigeria has won 16 medals at the 2026 CWG — eight gold, five silver, and three bronze.
