The president of Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Engineer Bright Idahosa has singled out the forthcoming Governor Douye Diri classic in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State as a competition of top quality, good organisation and prestigious status.
Sports247 reports that Idahosa was reeling lyrical following confirmation that this year’s Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Classic will commence on Saturday with a record ₦20m prize money available for Nigeria’s top players and some from West Africa, who will gather for the sixth edition.

Idahosa further asserted that the two-day competition, which is sanctioned by World English Scrabble Players Association (WESPA) and Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA), will attract more than 300 players for the opening rounds at Matho Crystal Hotel on Imiringi Road.
Heading into the commencement of the brain storming games, Governor Diri has approved a raise in the total cash rewards across five categories of the classics, whose finals and closing ceremony are scheduled for DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall of Bayelsa State Government House.
While the competition is again attracting elite players from within Nigeria and abroad, this year’s main attraction will be the Masters category, as the eventual winner will go home with ₦2m after the final on Sunday, which is twice the amount received in the same division last year.
“We remain grateful to Governor Douye Diri for his consistent commitment to this championship. It has become the competition every serious scrabble player wants to be part of because of its quality, organisation and prestige.
“Bayelsa also offers a peaceful atmosphere and exceptional hospitality, which is why many of us now feel completely at home whenever we come here,” said Idahosa, who also rated the classic as Nigeria’s most rewarding scrabble event.
