LIV Golf's demise accelerates as $40m season finale is 'set to be CANCELED'… but players are still in the dark about future

LIV Golf is set to cancel its season-ending team championship tournament in what may be the death knell for the Saudi-backed rebel tour.

The event, LIV Golf Michigan, was set to be held in suburban Detroit at The Cardinal at Saint John’s Resort from August 27-30 and had a prize pool of $40million.

But sources tell FrontOfficeSports that an announcement will be made on Wednesday officially confirming the cancellation of the 2026 showpiece.

The cancellation comes as the future of the rebel tour that pried names like Jon Rahm, Cameron Smith, and Bryson DeChambeau from the PGA Tour remains in question after the Saudi PIF announced it would stop funding LIV after this season’s end.

In the months since that announcement, players have been left somewhat in the dark over the viability for the future of the circuit.

Rumors surrounding the cancellation of the LIV regular-season finale – LIV Golf Indianapolis – also continue to be bandied about. However, that event is still scheduled to take place from August 20-23.

The rebel tour, which poached Cam Smith (L) and Bryson DeChambeau (R), is seemingly on its last legs after the Saudi PIF announced plans to pull its funding at the conclusion of the season

But the Michigan event seems destined for the chopping block. One source told FOS last month, ‘I don’t think they’ll ever get to Michigan.’ย

Around the same time, LIV CEO Scott O’Neil couldn’t guarantee that all four remaining events would go on as scheduled. One of those four events, LIV Golf UK, did get played.

Hints were dropped last week by Martin Kaymer, the captain of LIV’s Cleeks GC team, who told Today’s Golfer the Michigan team championship was ‘highly unlikely’ to be played after O’Neil held a captains meeting that left ‘lingering questions’ to be answered.

The final three events were scheduled to take place in the United States. In addition to the Indianapolis event, LIV Golf New York is still scheduled to go on at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey.ย

Of the $40million prize pool, the winning squad was supposed to take home $11.2million. Both those figures are down from last year’s numbers of $50m and $14m, respectively.

This is the second event to be cancelled this season, joining LIV Golf Louisiana’s cancellation from back in April.

LIV is still looking for new investors to replace the funding from the PIF. The tour is hoping to raise up to $350million to keep the league running in 2027.
