Andy Burnham and Taoiseach discuss legacy and Ukraine in first phone call

Andy Burnham has discussed legacy issues and Ukraine with Taoiseach Micheál Martin during their first phone call since he became UK prime minister.

Burnham gave his first national address as Britain’s premier on Monday after becoming the seventh occupant of Number 10 since 2016.

He pledged that his premiership would be “a circuit breaker for Britain” and that he would lead the “biggest changes in the last 40 years” in politics and economics.

Burnham held his first meeting of his new Cabinet on Tuesday after ousting allies of his predecessor Keir Starmer.

Micheál Martin said he was looking forward to meeting Burnham soon after they spoke by phone on Tuesday morning.

“Great to speak to new UK PM Andy Burnham this morning,” he said.

“Very good discussion on the positive relationship and cooperation between Ireland and the UK.

“We also discussed Northern Ireland including ongoing work on legacy, Ukraine, Ireland’s EU Presidency and the EU-UK relationship.

“Look forward to meeting soon and to working closely together to benefit people across these islands.”
