A woman was allegedly gang raped after being kidnapped by a taxi driver. Police said a man has been arrested while officers continue to search for three other suspects following the reported attack on Tuesday (July 14).
The woman, 36, is said to have called a taxi at around 8pm before being picked up. The driver allegedly ignored her request and took her to a house where the woman was allegedly raped. She managed to report the attack to the police at around 11.30pm before officers rushed to the scene and rescued her. Goyach Mia, 44, was arrested during the raid while three other suspects remain at large. Detectives are continuing to investigate the reported rape and are urging the public to provide relevant information.
As reported by TBS News, the alleged gang rape took place in the city of Sylhet in Bangladesh. The woman called an autorickshaw, a type of taxi, before reportedly being kidnapped.
Local media said she was taken from the Chandipur area of South Surma to Chhatak. According to Google Maps, the journey spans just over 47km (29 miles) and takes around one and a half hours by car.
After being rescued by police officers, the woman was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment. Her condition is unknown.
Police have since identified Ashik Mia, 30, Saidur Rahman, 30, and Amir Ali, 28, as the three other suspects involved in the alleged attack. Gazi Mahbubur Rahman, the officer in charge of the case, said officers are conducting raids across the area to track them down.
The woman was reportedly taken from Sylhet’s Bishwanath upazila, located around 20 miles South-west of the city. With a population of just over one million, Sylhet is ranked as the fifth biggest city in Bangladesh behind the capital, Dhaka, Chittagong, Gazipur and Narayanganj.
