The NBA has thrown its support behind the Protect College Sports Act of 2026, a bipartisan bill designed to bring more structure and stability to college athletics.
In a statement released on June 17, the league praised Senators Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell for introducing the legislation and described the bill as “a positive step” for college sports.
The league said:
“We continue to support a strong college basketball ecosystem, one that is based on clear and reliable standards and that prioritizes both player development and fair competition.
The Protect College Sports Act is a positive step and we look forward to continued engagement as the bill advances through the legislative process in the coming months.”
For years, the NBA has relied on college basketball as a great part of its player development pipeline. Now that college sports are undergoing major changes in recent years, the league has a clear interest in seeing a system that promotes player development and competitive balance.
The Protect College Sports Act aim is to create national standards for NIL rules, athlete protections, transfers, and eligibility requirements, while also addressing some of the legal uncertainty that has surrounded college athletics.
