Three people plunge to their deaths from Germany's 213ft-tall Harz Tower

Emergency services rushed to the Harz Tower in Altenau, Germany, where three people have fallen to their deaths – an investigation is underway

Three people have tragically plunged to their deaths from a 213ft-tall tourist landmark in Germany.

Emergency services rushed to the Harz Tower in Altenau, in the Goslar district of Lower Saxony, where the people fell at around 4.45pm today. They could not be saved.

The cause of the accident is still unclear, with the area cordoned off by police and privacy screens in place.

The famous lookout tower is in Torfhaus, the highest village in Germany’s Harz Mountains, and it is claimed to be the tallest observation tower in the country.

Made of wood and steel it cost around 10 million euros to build and received state funding while one of its features is a glass-floored skywalk at a height of around 45m.

It attracts many visitors with access to the top via stairs or a lift and there is a 110m slide as option to go down.
