England are set to take on Argentina in the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup on Wednesday evening, and Thomas Tuchel will have to walk a fine line throughout or risk being sanctioned by FIFA
Thomas Tuchel could be sanctioned by FIFA upon the culmination of the 2026 World Cup for his public criticism of match officials. A number of officials have been on the receiving end of backlash from players and managers at this summer’s tournament for controversial calls.
However, in a bid to cut down on clean the game up, sources close to World Football have claimed that action could be taken in the aftermath of this summer’s competition. A report from The Athletic also adds that any sanctions will be dependent on referee reports and other contributing factors.
It comes as Tuchel failed to hold his tongue in the aftermath of England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the round of 16, which was dampened by Jarell Quansah’s straight red card. Speaking after that match, the Three Lions’ head coach lambasted referee, Alireza Faghani.
He said of the officiating: “It’s not good enough. He (the referee) can send any team out in any moment.
“It’s just not good enough. It’s just erratic, it’s just unreliable in matches. Now, we have two fourth officials who just scream at you if you put one foot out of a coaching zone. It’s just not good enough.”
While the likes of the Premier League are content in handing touchline bans and fines to particularly outspoken managers, FIFA is understood to be reserving its decision to do so until the tournament’s conclusion.
Tuchel will have felt especially aggrieved by Quansah’s red card considering right-back has been a problem position for England for the duration of the 2026 World Cup. Tino Livramento was forced to pull out of the tournament early doors to undergo surgery on a minor issue, while Reece James and Djed Spence have also been battling their own respective injuries in part.

As a result of Quansah ruled out of participation until Sunday’s final, should England make it that far, Tuchel has had to think quickly on his feet and adapt accordingly. John Stones was partnered with Marc Guehi for England’s 2-1 win over Norway at the weekend, while Ezri Konsa operated on the right.
Elsewhere, many fans will wonder why Folarin Balogun’s suspension was delayed by a year earlier in the tournament, while Quansah and others have had to wait in the wings and serve their time. The USA striker picked up a straight red card during his nation’s round of 32 clash with Bosnia and Herzegovina for landing on Tahir Muharemovic’s calf with his studs.
While a one game suspension was initially handed to him, this was soon after delayed by a year by an independent disciplinary committee. It also emerged that the White House had called FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, to challenge the initial ban.
As a result, Balogun was able to start for his nation as they took on Belgium in the round of 16 – albeit, he failed to make a difference as USA bowed out of the tournament with a 4-1 loss.
