A woman broke down in tears after telling police she had been gang raped by three men. The unnamed assailants have since been arrested in connection with the sickening attack on the 22-year-old. Thakurpukur police confirmed an attack had taken place in southwest Kolkata, India.
The victim managed to escape the trio and report the horror ordeal to police at Netaji Nagar police station. Police then alerted Thakurpukur police representatives to lodge a report. The accused trio were arrested shortly afterwards, with one of the three men believed to have known the unnamed woman prior to the attack.
Members of the police force have since issued a statement regarding the assault, which took place on Sunday night.
A senior police officer said: “On Saturday, the woman had met Tinku at his residence located in Bachar Para area under the Thakurpukur police jurisdiction.” The woman also stated that the two friends of the man she knew prior to the rape had assisted him in committing the crime.
The trio allegedly snatched the woman’s phone from her to prevent her from contacting her family or the police. Senior police officials confirmed that the accused have been charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, TimesofIndia reported.
The woman is said to have fled the scene of the crime and approached officers at the Netaji Nagar police station.
While she initially reported that her phone had been stolen she would later break down in tears when speaking to the officers and confirmed that she had been gang raped.
Police are trying to identify the motive behind withholding the phone and are in the process of reconstructing the event. Cops launched an immediate raid on a Bachar Para home where the accused trio were found and arrested.
Investigators are exploring the allegations against the trio of men, who are currently being interrogated by police. Forensic probes and medical examinations are underway. Interrigations so far suggest that two of the three men made it home on Sunday monring.
