Lip readers believe they have uncovered what was said in a viral video of a South African couple arguing during a match at the World Cup.
The video showed a couple waving flags during the match against South Korea in Monterrey before the pair began bickering when the man was seen looking at his phone.
The two continued to speak at each other, with something appearing to strike the man’s nerve. Even when the woman sat down to seemingly disengage from the discussion, the man repeatedly turned around in what seemed like an agitated or confrontational manner.
While what was said was initially a mystery, expert analyst and professional lip reader Nicola Hickling believes to have cracked the case.
Hickling, working in partnership with Covers, says the woman in the dress accidentally hit the little boy next to her with her flag, prompting her to apologize.
After she began waving it away from the boy, she noticed her man on his phone – before he showed her what was on it.

In the video, the unidentified man was seen yelling repeatedly at his supposed partner
‘There is nothing to see. The lads took pictures and sent them,’ he appears to have said.
The woman then asks ‘Why are you looking?’ to which the man responds, ‘I’m not looking at other women.’
The two go back and forth before the man says, ‘Maybe this is why [I] don’t mention things,’ before she responds, ‘That’s enough.’
Finally, the man is seen saying, ‘Shut up,’ before she replies, ‘I am sick of you always arguing.’
While the video was initially posted to TikTok, it went viral on other social media platforms as well – with plenty of comments and speculation about what the fight was about.
‘How can I file a divorce for someone else?’ one user on X asked.
One account mocked, ‘The divorce came out of nowhere.’

One user guessed that the man was placing bets on the outcome of the game. Others suggested possible infidelity.
A number of users made the same remarks about the camera operator, calling them ‘nosy’ for staying parked on the pair.
