Armed police have shot a gunman who allegedly screamed “Allahu Akbar” and opened fire outside a supermarket in Germany. Police in Dresden, Germany, were called at around 8.20am on Wednesday to reports of an armed man standing outside a supermarket.
Special forces for life-threatening situations arrived at the Netto supermarket in the Friedrichstadt district and saw the man “with a kind of musket in his hand … which he then fired at the officers”. The 41-year-old Turkish man reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” as officers used their weapons to injure him, witnesses told news agency xcitepress.
There was an exchange of gunfire followed by a scream from the man and a pool of blood on the ground, they claimed.
Police said the man had a “kind of musket in his hand” rather than a typical gun, “which he then fired at the officers”, German outlet BILD reports.
Images from the scene outside the supermarket showed specialist police officers with masks and guns surrounding the entrance, while a man was lying in the back of an ambulance.
The gunman was injured and subdued before being taken to hospital. He remains under investigation for threats and violations of weapons laws.
Investigations are under way to determine how many times he was shot by police and whether their operation was lawful, as well as whether the man’s weapon was live.
The area around the entrance to the Netto supermarket and its car park have been cordoned off by police, who stress there is no further danger to the public.
It remains unclear whether the gunman intended to shop at the supermarket or if he had connections to any of its employees.
