Brazil: CCTV captures attempted kidnap of newborn baby

This is the terrifying moment a hospital worker, who lied about being pregnant, allegedly attempted to kidnap a newborn baby from a hospital.

A nursing technician at a maternity hospital in Teresina, northern Brazil, had been on medical leave but was able to get back into the ward with scrubs on. Auricelia de Sousa Rocha was arrested on Monday, a day after CCTV from the Evangelina Rosa Maternity Hospital showed a worker walking with the baby.

The baby’s aunt, Daniela Beatriz, claimed Rocha approached the baby’s mum shortly after the birth and said the child needed a “heel prick test”.

Beatriz, according to Globo, then claimed she went with the technician, who led her to another floor, while the mum stayed in her room to recover. The aunt then claimed Rocha walked into a room, asked the aunt to wait outside then changed her clothes and tried to leave with the baby in a bag.

Beatriz said: “She told me, ‘I’m going in here, but you have to stay outside because they can’t see you here. Sit on the bench, and I’ll be right back with her.’ She already had that large black bag over her shoulder, and although I handed over the baby, I already had a bad feeling.”

Hospital CCTV showed a woman wearing scrubs walking with a black bag on her shoulders and walking with a baby wrapped in a red blanket.

The footage then shows a woman wearing a black dress and holding a bag on her shoulder, before another woman confronts her, grabs the bag and stops her from leaving the building.

The aunt, speaking to CNN Brazil, said: “When I questioned her about what was happening, if she really was an employee of the maternity ward, she told me that she was an employee and that it wasn’t what I was thinking.”

Police said that at the suspect’s home they discovered a room set up with baby clothes, diapers, a crib and bathtub, according to Globo. Rocha had allegedly lied to her family and told them she was pregnant, although had never showed tests proving it.

Rocha’s attorney has said the suspect was diagnosed with schizophrenic symptoms and her ability to understand the seriousness of the investigation was impaired. The police, according to Globo, claimed it would not consider mental health issues would negate responsibility for the alleged act.
