Manchester United could consider a shock move for Cody Gakpo if one condition is met by the Liverpool star this summer.
United and Liverpool are bitter rivals and have rarely conducted business with each other, however the Red Devils have long-admired Gakpo and considered a deal for him before the Dutchman moved to Merseyside in 2023.
Speculation has grown over Gakpo’s future amid reports that Liverpool would be open to the 27-year-old’s departure and transfer reporter Ben Jacobs suggested that United would be in the race for his signature if the winger asks to leave Anfield.
“He has always been somewhat appreciated, but we know that Man United and Liverpool just don’t really do business. So, whether or not that could possibly get off the ground, I’m not so sure,” Jacobs told The United Stand.
“There are denials, despite recent reports in the Netherlands, that Gakpo has asked in any way, shape, or form to leave. So, Liverpool are quite calm about the situation, but Tottenham might consider that deal. And all we can say is Man United loved Gakpo before he joined Liverpool.
He added: “If Gakpo specifically asks to leave Liverpool, then let’s see where the Premier League clubs come forward. And it seems like Tottenham are the most concrete suitor.”
Cody Gakpo: Could Man Utd break a 62-year tradition by signing the Liverpool star?
No player has been transferred between Liverpool and Man Utd since 1964 and there is no suggestion that Michael Carrick’s side would look to pursue a deal in any case but the club have held a long-standing interest in Gakpo and want a player in his profile this summer.
United had been heavily linked with Gakpo during Erik ten Hag’s time in charge but Liverpool eventually closed a quick deal in January 2023.
Gakpo has been a regular feature for Liverpool since his €42 million move from PSV and he was a key player for Arne Slot last season, missing just two Premier League matches.
However, Slot’s departure has led to reports that Gakpo could be unsettled at Liverpool and Tottenham have been touted as potential suitors for the forward if he does become available.
Jacobs claimed that Liverpool would be using Anthony Gordon’s €80m transfer from Newcastle to Barcelona as a benchmark for a fee if they did opt to cash in on Gakpo.
