A man is fighting for his life in hospital after being shot in the head during a drive-by shooting in Bradford.
Armed officers swooped after the victim suffered a gunshot wound on Gaythorne Road, in West Bowling, Bradford, West Yorks. A 28-year-old man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening head injuries after the horror unfolded at 10.57pm last night (Wed).
Police said initial enquiries suggest the firearm was discharged from a white BMW which was later found burnt out over a mile away.
One shocked local resident, who did not want to be named, told how she heard two gunshots. She said: “I was in the living room and I heard two times, bang, bang, and after two or three minutes the police and ambulance arrived. The police said, go, everyone down, because there is shots.”
Another resident said after the shooting they went outside and saw police and emergency services swarming the area.
Another resident who witnessed the car fire added: “I thought it was someone having a fire in the back garden, it sounded like someone had put aerosols in the fire.
“Then there was a bang and that’s when I got up. I went out into the back garden, I could see smoke but I couldn’t see fire. I went out onto the passage way and the front end of the car was in flames. The place has gone to pot.”
Detective Chief Inspector Dan Bates, of West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team. said: “This is a very serious incident where a lethal weapon has been used on the streets of Bradford.
“From initial enquiries we believe this to be a targeted attack. Extensive enquiries remain ongoing. We are working with our local neighbourhood policing colleagues to provide reassurance and there will be a large police presence and extra uniformed patrols over the coming hours.
“Firearms incidents are rare in our communities, but when they do occur, no stone is left unturned to bring those responsible to justice. I would appeal to anyone who was in the area last night who saw anything suspicious to come forward and provide information.”
The fire service has confirmed they were called to the area following reports of a car on fire.
A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said: “We were called last night at 11:04 pm to reports of a car fire on Brompton Road. One crew from Bradford attended to extinguish it.”
The shooting occurred a couple of streets away from where 19-year-old Junaid Khan was murdered in June of last year
