Just one day earlier, Trump commented on his call with FIFA boss Gianni Infantino over a red card and ban for the US’ star striker and top goalscorer.
The US president urged Infantino to review a red card given to Folarin Balogun in the Round-of-32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Balogun should have been automatically banned for the match against Belgium after being sent off in his prior game.
Trump and Andrew Giuliani, executive director of the White House’s World Cup task force, spoke to Infantino by phone and the automatic one-match suspension was postponed.
FIFA said on Sunday that the punishment had been suspended
This allowed the country’s leading goal-scorer to play.
Trump later thanked FIFA in a post on Truth Social, writing: “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right and reversing a great injustice.”
