England shorten to 5/1 with Sky Bet to win the World Cup after Azteca classic

England have been cut to 5/1 with Sky Bet to win the World Cup after an unforgettable victory over Mexico in an all-time classic at the Azteca.

Thomas Tuchel’s side travelled to face the hosts knowing they had the chance to inflict just a third competitive defeat on El Tri in their last 90 competitive matches at the iconic stadium. And that’s exactly what they did, edging a pulsating Round of 16 encounter 3-2.

England raced into a two-goal lead with a pair of strikes in the space of just 90 seconds, only for Mexico to respond four minutes later to reduce the deficit before half-time.

Harry Kane restored England’s two-goal cushion from the penalty spot on the hour mark, but Mexico refused to go away and converted a penalty of their own nine minutes later to set up a tense finale.

With the score at 3-2, the Three Lions came under relentless pressure, but showed tremendous resilience to withstand Mexico’s late onslaught and seal a famous victory in hostile territory.

England’s reward is a quarter-final showdown with Norway on Saturday after Erling Haaland and Co stunned Brazil to book their place in the last eight.

Returning to the outright winner market, France remain favourites at 7/4, while Argentina have shortened to 9/2 second favourites despite an unconvincing victory over minnows Cape Verde in the previous round.

England’s price of 5/1 leaves them third in the betting, with pre-tournament joint favourites Spain drifting to 6/1 in fourth.

Norway and Portugal are next at 14/1, although one of Portugal or Spain’s prices is guaranteed to disappear tonight as the Iberian rivals meet in a blockbuster Round of 16 clash in Dallas.

With the quarter-final line-up beginning to take shape, the outright market is tightening fast – and England’s dramatic triumph over Mexico has firmly established Tuchel’s men among the leading contenders for World Cup glory.
