Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali “has never been so close to joining Tottenham” following a bid of more than €100 million.
The Italy international is edging closer to a departure from the Magpies. Tonali was already the subject of interest in January after being offered to Arsenal by his representatives.
The saga has dragged on into the summer, with several Premier League heavyweights showing an interest in him. In addition to Arsenal, Man Utd and Man City are also huge admirers of the 26-year-old.
However, it is Tottenham who are now leading the chase for Tonali. Spurs are finally acting like a big club this summer and have already made four signings as they back new head coach Roberto de Zerbi.
On Tuesday, the North London club reached a €98m agreement with West Ham for the transfer of Mateus Fernandes, beating Man Utd to his signature. Tonali could now be next in line.
Spurs make new Tonali bid
Having recently seen a bid rejected for the Italy international, Tottenham have now presented an improved offer that is “slightly above €100m,” as per Sky Italia transfer insider Gianluca di Marzio.
Although Newcastle have repeatedly insisted that they do not want to lose Tonali, a move looks increasingly inevitable. Di Marzio claims that significant progress has been made in the talks between the Magpies and Spurs.
As a result, it is believed that “Tonali and Tottenham have never been closer than they are now,” although the journalist makes sure to emphasise that Newcastle have yet to respond to the offer.
It is entirely possible that the St. James’ Park club remain firm on their stance and Tottenham would have to further improve their bid. Elliot Anderson’s €134m move to Man City has inflated the midfielder market, and Newcastle also want a fee well over €100m to consider a Tonali sale.
Meanwhile, Tottenham and Newcastle have held discussions over a deal for Archie Gray, who could potentially head in the opposite direction. An opening bid from the Magpies has been rebuffed by Spurs, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The North London club appear reluctant to sanction Gray’s exit given that fellow midfielder Lucas Bergvall is pushing to leave the club. Losing both would be damaging, even if Fernandes and Tonali were to arrive.
