Arsenal set to sign key new member of backroom staff – as Premier League title winners embark on huge overhaul behind the scenes

Arsenal are closing on a deal to bring Granada sporting director Javier Alonso to the club after he resigned from his post earlier this week.

The 37-year-old was targeted by Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta and is expected to join the club’s recruitment team.

Mikel Arteta will look to reinforce his side this summer and on Tuesday night an Arsenal delegation watched Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola for France against Sweden.

Alonso worked alongside Berta at Atletico Madrid between 2016 and 2024, during which time they won one LaLiga title.

Granada, who finished 14th in the Spanish second division last season, had hoped to hold on to the 37-year-old. However, he is now expected to start with the Gunners next week.

Arsenal are aiming to make further changes behind the scenes as they look to kick on from their Premier League title triumph.

They have already acquired the services of Maurizio Michele, who left his role as Napoli’s head of scouting to join in a leading recruitment position.

The Gunners are also seeking a replacement for Per Mertesacker as academy director and have held talks with Pascal De Maesschalck, who is the technical director at Chelsea’s BlueCo sister club Strasbourg.

Meanwhile, they’re set to hire former Olympic sprinter Arnaldo Abrantes as head doctor.
