Bruno Guimaraes is a reported target for Arsenal this summer and Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has issued a warning to his old club
Alan Shearer has told Newcastle United that selling Bruno Guimaraes this summer would be a ‘really poor look’ – amid mounting interest from Premier League champions Arsenal.
Chronicle Live has reported that Newcastle are bracing themselves for an official approach from the Gunners for their captain, with the club’s current position being that Guimaraes is firmly not for sale.
Despite an initial verbal bid of £45m, submitted through intermediaries, being rejected by Newcastle, there have been suggestions that Arsenal are confident that an offer in the region of £65m could be sufficient to secure Bruno’s signature.
Guimaraes is currently showcasing his talents at the World Cup with Brazil and registered his fourth assist of the tournament when his incisive pass teed up Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli to net a stoppage-time winner in their 2-1 victory over Japan in the round of 32.
Only France’s Michael Olise, with five assists, has contributed more than Guimaraes in the competition, with the midfielder firmly establishing himself on the world stage with his performances in North America this summer.
His agent Alexis Malavolta is Stateside with the 28-year-old as Brazil prepare to travel to New York to face Norway in the last 16 on Sunday evening.
Should a transfer come to fruition, however, Shearer has warned Newcastle of significant supporter backlash. The club’s fanbase reluctantly accepted Anthony Gordon’s departure to Barcelona and could just about stomach Sandro Tonali’s exit, but patience may be wearing thin.
But should Guimaraes be sold, serious doubts would emerge regarding Newcastle’s ambitions, and for that very reason, Shearer has sent a firm warning to his old club.

“I think it would look be a really poor look for Newcastle to sell their best player,” he told Betfair.
“You can see what he’s doing for Brazil in this World Cup. I think he’s been one of their best players. He is a brilliant talent.
“And with Anthony Gordon going, I think it would be a really poor look if Newcastle were to sell Bruno. And it would not go down well with the fans.
“I don’t see it happening. I’d be surprised if it were to happen. I hope it’s just paper talk and there’s no truth in that because it would be a big blow to Newcastle. There’d be a lot of angry fans if he were to go.
“I think it’s even more so now because of social media and everyone has an opinion and everyone can say what they want. 99% of it is going to be trash, and I do hope it’s trash about Bruno.”
