The body of a newborn baby has been discovered inside a portable toilet at a major music festival, prompting an investigation by police. Michigan State Police said the infant’s body was found on Sunday morning in a portable restroom located within the camping area of the Electric Forest festival in Rothbury, Michigan.
According to the force, the grim discovery was made by an employee from the company responsible for servicing the toilets. In a statement, Michigan State Police said: “The body was discovered by an employee of the restroom vending company during routine maintenance.” Officers have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death. In a later update, Michigan State Police confirmed: “The Michigan State Police continue to investigate the discovery of a deceased neonate found Sunday morning in the camping area at the Electric Forest Festival.” The force added: “Investigators are asking for the public’s assistance.
“If you were in the area and observed anything unusual, or if you have information that you believe may be relevant, we encourage you to come forward.”
Police also urged people not to speculate about the case online, saying: “We appreciate the public’s cooperation and ask that people avoid speculation on social media out of respect for the investigation and those affected.”
In a post on the festival’s official Facebook page, organisers said: “Forest Family, it causes us so much pain to have to share this difficult news with you.
“Michigan State Police continues to investigate this tragic event if you can assist in any way.
“HQ is heartbroken and knows that our Forest Family is as well.”
The Electric Forest festival is held at Double JJ Ranch and attracts thousands of people each year for a weekend of live music, with dozens of DJs and artists performing across multiple stages.
This year’s event began on Thursday and concluded on Sunday night, according to the festival’s website.
Rothbury is located around 61 miles northwest of Grand Rapids in the US state of Michigan.
