Iran has announced plans for a two-day public farewell and funeral for Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, who was killed in US-Israeli strikes on 28 February, Iranian media reported.
Brigadier General Hassan Hassanzadeh, commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Tehran Command and head of the committee overseeing the ceremonies, said farewell events, funeral prayers and processions will take place on 4 and 5 July, according to the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).
Iranian media reports say authorities expect up to 35 million people to take part in the ceremonies, which could become the largest funeral gathering in modern history.
According to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, farewell ceremonies will be held at Tehran’s Mosalla prayer grounds, followed by a funeral procession in the holy city of Qom.
