Canada vs South Africa guide: The World Cup hosts are odds-on favourites to win the opening round-of-32 fixture, while the Bafana Bafana are 17/4 underdogs

Canada’s group-stage campaign has been something of a rollercoaster, producing a win, a draw and a defeat.

Jesse Marsch’s side began with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina before responding in emphatic fashion, thrashing Qatar 6-0 in their second outing.

However, with top spot in the group still within reach, they were brought back down to earth by a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland in their final fixture.

That loss meant Canada had to settle for second place, forcing them to play their round-of-32 tie in Los Angeles rather than on home soil.

Even so, the hosts have been handed a favourable draw, with South Africa standing between them and a place in the last 16.

At the time of writing, Canada are 7/10 favourites to progress, while South Africa are priced at 17/4 to spring an upset. The draw is available at 23/10.

South Africa’s route to the knockout stages was equally eventful. After suffering a 2-0 defeat to Mexico in their opening match, Bafana Bafana kept their hopes alive with a draw against Czechia before sealing qualification in stunning fashion with a shock victory over South Korea.

Can they produce another surprise and knock out one of the tournament hosts? Or will Canada prove a step too far? Only time will tell.
