The US says it has struck Iran in retaliation for a drone attack on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
The US military carried out airstrikes on Iranian missile and drone storage locations and coastal radar sites on Friday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.
It described the strikes as a “powerful response” to Thursday’s “attack” on a vessel in the strait. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) centre reported that a cargo ship was struck 7.5 nautical miles southeast of Oman’s port of Dahit by “an unknown projectile”. No casualties were reported.
CENTCOM said Iran hit the Singapore-flagged M/V Ever Lovely with a one-way attack drone as it was exiting the Strait of Hormuz along the Omani coast.
“The unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping by Iranian forces clearly violated the ceasefire,” CENTCOM said. “Furthermore, Iran’s dangerous behavior undermined freedom of navigation as commerce increasingly flows through the vital international trade corridor.”
