The child was found unconscious inside the vehicle in a car park at the university medical campus in Marseille on Tuesday.
Firefighters rushed the child to La Timone Hospital suffering from hyperthermia, but they later died.
According to BFM Marseille Provence, the child’s parent is believed to have forgotten the toddler in the car on the way to work at the campus.
The tragedy comes as France endures an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring well above seasonal averages across much of the country.
The spell of extreme heat, which has brought highs of between 32C and 38C across large parts of France and western Europe, is expected to continue until the end of the week, according to AccuWeather.
Wednesday was the hottest day ever recorded in France, as reported by national weather agency Météo-France.
The highest temperature of 43.8C was recorded in Palluau, in the Vendée department, surpassing the previous national record.
