The vice-chancellor University of Calabar, Professor Offiong Effanga Offiong has promised that adequate security will be provided during this year’s Nigerian University Games (NUGA), in order to make it an exciting and memorable competition.
Sports247 reports that Professor Offiong also assured participants of adequate safety during the Games, as UNICAL authorities will work closely with regular security agencies to protect athletes and officials throughout the competition.

He added that, beyond sporting values, NUGA 2026 will also provide social and economic benefits to the host community, while further promoting Cross River State as a leading destination for sports tourism and environmental conservation.
Offiong made these promises while speaking during a ceremony to formally unveil ‘Omon The Gorilla’ as official mascot for the 28th NUGA Games, which The Canaan City institution is scheduled to host from November 14th to 24th.
A statement by the organisers disclosed that the mascot, which is inspired by the endangered Cross River gorilla, is a symbol of strength, resilience, unity, excellence and determination, values that embody the aspirations of student-athletes across Nigeria.
“The unveiling marks a major milestone in preparations for the Games, which have been christened the Paradise Games, in celebration of Cross River State’s rich biodiversity, cultural heritage and tourism potential.
“OMON will serve as the face of the Games and feature in promotional campaigns, community outreach, volunteer engagements and educational initiatives aimed at creating awareness on wildlife conservation and environmental sustainability.
‘The 28th edition of the NUGA Games is expected to attract about 95 universities and over 10,000 athletes, coaches, sports administrators, volunteers and spectators from across the country to compete in 24 sporting events.
“The University of Calabar, which will host the sporting festival, has reaffirmed its commitment to sports development, talent discovery and infrastructure enhancement, as it intensifies preparations for the competition.,” the statement added.
