World Cup transfer watch: Brown draws Arsenal gaze, Diomande impresses Liverpool

Several transfer-linked stars managed to sparkle on matchday four of the 2026 World Cup, including Germany left-back Nathaniel Brown and Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande.

Arsenal-linked Brown catches the eye for Germany

Nathaniel Brown had a World Cup debut to remember after scoring and assisting in Germany’s thumping 7-1 win over debutants Curacao.

The Eintracht Frankfurt defender was a surprise inclusion in Julian Nagelsmann’s starting eleven, with David Raum having been expected to feature from the get-go, but he repaid his manager’s faith with a terrific display in Group E.

After Germany were pegged back by Curacao’s maiden World Cup goal after 21 minutes, Brown curled in the corner which Nico Schlotterbeck headed home to restore his side’s lead, before the 22-year-old made it 5-1 when latching onto Deniz Undav’s flicked pass in the second half.

Brown’s performance will have caught the attention of Arsenal, who The Athletic claim are interested in signing him, though The Telegraph understands he is poised to join Bayern Munich for €57.9million (£50m) once the World Cup concludes.

Liverpool target Diomande impresses for Ivory Coast

Yan Diomande highlighted why he is one of the most coveted players in world football after starring in Ivory Coast’s tight 1-0 win over Ecuador in Group E.

The 19-year-old played the full 90 minutes as his country earned their first World Cup victory in 12 years against an Ecuador side who conversely suffered their first defeat in almost two years.

And Ivory Coast had Diomande to thank for that, with the RB Leipzig ace creating more chances than any other player (5) in Philadelphia, while he also had the most touches (12) in the opposition box.

Diomande is Liverpool’s preferred replacement for Mohamed Salah, according to The Athletic, though the winger expressed his admiration for Paris Saint-Germain in a pre-tournament interview.

Summerville makes impressive World Cup bow for Netherlands

Crysencio Summerville scored on his first appearance at a World Cup as the Netherlands were twice pegged back to draw 2-2 with Japan on Sunday.

Summerville was handed a starting berth ahead of Memphis Depay against Japan, with the in-form Donyell Malen operating through the middle, and he found the far corner with a superb left-footed strike after 64 minutes.

The 24-year-old was in fine form for West Ham United towards the back end of last season, but an untimely injury played a huge role in his club side’s relegation from the Premier League.

He was expected to draw interest even before being included in the Netherlands’ World Cup squad, according to The Telegraph, but that will be guaranteed if he keeps up his goalscoring heroics in North America.

Schlotterbeck proved a menace from Germany’s set-pieces

Germany defender Schlotterbeck was a set-piece threat even before heading home from Brown’s corner after 38 minutes, with the 26-year-old testing the reflexes of Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room moments before his goal.

Regarded as one of the best central defenders in Europe, Schlotterbeck started alongside Jonathan Tah in a German backline which, in their build-up play, formed a back three with Joshua Kimmich tucking inside.

Schlotterbeck has been loosely linked with Real Madrid this summer, with the Borussia Dortmund man reportedly having a €60m (£51.8m) release clause in his contract which runs until 2031.

Kamada gets lucky as Japan rescue point against Netherlands

Daichi Kamada had the honour of being credited with Japan’s last-gasp equaliser in their 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in Arlington.

The 29-year-old didn’t know too much about it, though, with the ball ricocheting off him after Koki Ogawa’s bullet header from a corner.

Kamada’s club future remains up in the air at the moment, with the midfielder’s contract with Crystal Palace due to expire at the end of June.

However, the Eagles recently announced in a statement that they have offered the former Frankfurt man fresh terms.
