Arsenal have reportedly fallen behind Manchester United in the battle to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes. The Gunners have been heavily linked with a move for the 21-year-old playmaker, while United have also been mentioned as a possible destination for Fernandes.
Following West Ham’s relegation to the Championship, speculation has mounted that the Hammers are valuing Fernandes at around £80million this summer.
A fresh update has now emerged that will hand Arsenal a potential blow to their hopes of signing Fernandes this summer.
According to The Times, United have now established themselves as the frontrunners to secure Fernandes’ signature this summer, pulling clear of Premier League rivals Arsenal in the process.
The report indicates that while United maintain a firm interest in signing Fernandes, they are unwilling to meet West Ham’s £80m valuation for the player.
Adding further intrigue to the situation, Real Madrid have also entered the fray for the 21-year-old, with new manager Jose Mourinho reportedly eager to bring Fernandes to the Santiago Bernabeu as he looks to put his own stamp on his newly inherited squad.
After West Ham’s drop into the Championship, speculation has emerged that the club could be compelled to sanction Fernandes’ departure during the summer window.
Arsenal are bracing themselves for a busy summer of recruitment, with numerous players already being touted as potential arrivals at the Emirates Stadium.

Reports have also speculated that Paris Saint-Germain star Bradley Barcola has also emerged as a potential target for Arsenal, with Liverpool also supposedly interested.
