Christian Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine on Sunday and his ex-Tottenham teammate Harry Kane has since sent him a touching message
Harry Kane has sent an emotional message to Christian Eriksen and said his former Tottenham teammate has a ‘decision to make’ after he collapsed while playing for Denmark on Sunday.
Eriksen who had a cardiac arrest at the European Championship in 2021, held his chest in the 65th minute of Denmark’s fixture against Ukraine at Odense Stadium and fell to the ground. The 34-year-old fell unconscious for a brief period and the match was halted and abandoned.
After spending less than 24 hours in hospital, Eriksen, who was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator device (ICD) after his 2021 collapse, was discharged on Monday and issued a positive update on Instagram.
“I want to let everyone know that I am doing well and that I am home with my family,” Eriksen said. “As you can probably imagine, receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major impact on both me and my family, but I want to reassure everyone that this was a different situation from what happened in 2021.
“I am feeling good, and my recovery has already started. In addition to being grateful for the support and assistance of all the players and the medical team on the field, I am also incredibly grateful to the doctors who have cared for me and my heart over the years.
“Thanks to their expertise, my ICD did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it. For now, my focus is on recovering, spending time with my family, going on vacation, and playing football with my children.”
“I reached out to him today,” Kane told ITV. “I haven’t heard back from him from Chris yet, but he put the statement out saying he is going to go away, rest up and spend time with the family which is important.
“I’m sure he is going to have some decisions to make over the next months, but the main thing is that the defibrillator is there and it worked. I think it’s scary because we all remember what it was like when it happened last time and I’m sure his family and his wife Sabrina is the same.
“So, it was a scary moment when we came in and I saw the news to be honest with you, obviously a bit calmer now I know he is okay and everything seemed to work in a way it’s supposed. I am wishing him well and I am sure I’ll catch up with him soon.”
