Chelsea are expected to strengthen their squad this summer with Xabi Alonso at the helm
Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso could land a bargain this summer by signing Darwin Nunez after a reported interest in the former Liverpool striker.
The Blues, along with Newcastle United and Barcelona, are said to be keen on signing the Uruguayan amid his ongoing struggles in Saudi Arabia.
Nunez signed for Al-Hilal from the Reds last summer for a reported £47.6million, but has scored just nine goals in 24 appearances since his move to the Middle East.
Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo claims Chelsea are among the clubs keen on signing Nunez, who could terminate his contract with the Saudi club.
The former Liverpool striker lost his license to play in the Saudi Professional League after Al-Hilal swooped to sign Karim Benzema from Al Nassr.
Some media outlets claim Nunez has held talks to terminate his contract and leave on mutual consent, which would make him a low cost signing for any interested parties.

Mundo Deportivo focuses on Barcelona’s interest in the striker, claiming the La Liga champions already have a positive rapport with his agent Jorge Mendes.
While Barca’s main transfer target is Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvaraez, Nunez is being presented as a cheaper alternative.
The club have negotiated with Mendes previously regarding another of his clients – Joao Cancelo – but it’s claimed Nunez wants a return to Liverpool.
Alonso’s arrival at Chelsea could present the Uruguay international with another avenue to return to the Premier League, while Newcastle are also in the market for a striker.
The Magpies were linked with Nunez before his move to Anfield and Eddie Howe’s side are looking to bolster their options up front having struggled last season.
Alonso will formally join Chelsea on July 1 but paid a visit to Cobham last week to familiarise himself with his new surroundings and prepare for the upcoming campaign.
