A 37-year-old man suspected of being part of Hamas was detained on the holiday island of Crete after being accused of plotting to bomb a cruise ship, Greek police have said
Greek police say they have arrested a man with suspected ties to Hamas after he allegedly tried to attack a cruise ship.
The 37-year-old Palestinian national was detained on holiday island of Crete on Saturday afternoon, authorities said. They have accused the man of joining Hamas and travelling abroad to be trained by the militant group.
Intelligence agents carried out searches homes in both Crete and Athens, where they said they found a number of mobile phones, a laptop, external hard drives and bank cards. The suspect will appear before a magistrate later Sunday.
Police said the man’s arrest is linked to the detention of four other Palestinian men in Cyprus who are also being investigated on “terrorism-related” charges and “belonging to a criminal organization”.
Authorities in Cyprus initially placed two men in custody on May 22 following what they said was the evaluation of gathered intelligence.
According to officers, suspected material that could be used in the manufacture of explosives was found in two residences used by one of the men.
The other two men were detained on May 29 as part of the same investigation.
