Arsenal have already conducted extensive groundwork on a deal to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, FootballTransfers can exclusively confirm.
The Premier League champions first took an interest in the creative midfielder last summer, with the 23-year-old a player Arsenal were monitoring closely at that time, FootballTransfers revealed.
Sporting director Andrea Berta was a huge admirer of Rogers at that point, and the Italian’s respect for the Aston Villa star remains undiminished. Indeed, he has made the England international his personal project for the summer and has already conducted substantial work towards driving a deal through.
While Arsenal are interested in Rogers, there is a major sticking point in terms of the transfer fee.
Aston Villa value their player in the region of €115 million (£100m). While Arsenal’s exact valuation of Rogers is not clear, sources have indicated that it is “significantly less” than the Birmingham club’s demand.
The Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of the 24-year-old sits at €65.8m, with this figure based upon hundreds of in-game data points, thousands of historical transfers and other factors such as contract length and age.
Villa forced to sell?
Aston Villa are expected to be forced into one major sale this summer to comply with financial regulations, despite qualifying for the Champions League next season.
According to The Telegraph, the likeliest player to be sold is Rogers, despite the ex-Middlesborough contributing 14 goals and 12 assists to his side’s cause this term.
The report also claims that Villa may be prepared to drop their demands for their player to something in the region of €90m, potentially offering the Gunners hope of concluding a deal.
They face competition from Chelsea and Manchester United, who have also been linked with the England ace.
Analysis: Arsenal told not to move for Rogers
Arsenal should seriously consider backing out of a deal for Rogers, according to the advice of data analytics firm SciSports, which suggests the Gunners are not well-suited for the attacker.
Its Career Advice tool does not rate the move highly, giving the North London side a score of only 59. It suggests that Rogers development could stagnate at Arsenal, which casts serious doubt over whether he will get significant game time at the Emirates Stadium.
While Mikel Arteta’s formation does suit him, SciSports believes that the style of the Gunners is very different from one that is liable to bring the best out of the Aston Villa star.
Newcastle is seen as the optimal move for Rogers if he is to leave Villa Park, with the St James’ Park outfit scoring 83.
