Rangers have reportedly made a “fresh approach” to re-sign Wrexham star Josh Windass, who left the club back in 2018.
The Englishman was Wrexham’s top goalscorer in 2025-26 after netting 16 goals in 41 Championship matches during his debut season for the club, and he played a pivotal role as Phil Parkinson’s side ended their first campaign back in the second-tier for over 40 years with a seventh-place finish.
The 32-year-old rejected the chance to return to Rangers last summer, choosing to join Wrexham from Sheffield Wednesday instead, while the Scottish giants also saw an offer rebuffed during the January transfer window.
However, they have now once again attempted to bring him back to Ibrox, as per Ben Jacobs. The transfer reporter posted on X: “Rangers have made a fresh approach to Josh Windass to discuss bringing him back to Ibrox.
“It follows an attempt in January which Wrexham rebuffed. Move driven by Danny Rohl, who had Windass at Sheffield Wednesday. No club-to-club talks yet. Wrexham had indicated in January they didn’t want to sell.”
Windass made 73 appearances across a two-year spell at Rangers from 2016 to 2018, before being sold to Wigan Athletic for a transfer fee of €2.8 million. He subsequently joined Sheffield Wednesday and netted 53 goals in 182 appearances for the club, with 20 of those strikes coming during a two-year stint working with Danny Rohl, who was appointed as Rangers manager last year.
Rohl is reportedly keen to secure a reunion with his former Sheffield Wednesday star and he is pushing Rangers to finalise a deal when the summer window opens.
When asked if he will remain at Wrexham next season by eSPORTY earlier this month, Windass: “Yeah, I signed a three-year deal in the summer. I feel like I had a really good year this year, and yeah, hopefully next year we can go one better.”
However, Rangers are keen to lure him away from the Racecourse Ground as they look to build a squad capable of reclaiming the Scottish Premiership title for the first time since 2021 next year.

Rangers close to Lawrence Shankland deal
While a possible summer deal for Windass remains in its infancy, Rangers are close to finalising the signing of Hearts captain Lawrence Shankland, who is expected to put pen to paper on a lucrative contract this week.
The Scotland international will be in action for his country at this summer’s World Cup and Rangers are keen to announce his arrival on a permanent deal before he links up with Steve Clarke’s squad ahead of the tournament.
Multiple sources have confirmed that a total agreement has been reached, with Shankland set to become Rangers’ new starting striker after netting 20 goals in 34 games for Hearts this season.
