Liverpool are considering making a move for Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon if they cannot agree a deal with RB Leipzig for Yan Diomande, according to The Telegraph.
The Reds are looking to strengthen their forward line following the departure of Mohamed Salah, who brought down the curtain on his legendary Anfield career against Brentford on the final day of the Premier League season.
Liverpool have made in-demand Leipzig winger Diomande their primary target, according to The Athletic, though The i Paper claims the club want to sign him for less than his reported €100million (£86m) valuation.
However, while The Telegraph also says Diomande is Liverpool’s dream signing, Arne Slot’s side are reportedly considering boyhood fan Gordon and Paris Saint-Germain star Bradley Barcola as possible alternatives.
The Telegraph’s report follows a separate story in the Daily Mail which claims Tottenham Hotspur have also made enquiries regarding the availability of Diomande, who is regarded as one of the best young players in the world.
Ivory Coast international Diomande enjoyed a remarkable first season with Leipzig, scoring 12 goals and recording seven assists in the Bundesliga as Ole Werner’s men secured Champions League qualification with a third-place finish.
Should Liverpool look to firm up their interest in Gordon, the club will face stiff competition from German giants Bayern Munich, who have made the England winger their number one target this summer, according to various reports.
The Times understands Bayern are close to agreeing personal terms with Gordon on a five-year contract, though the club are currently not willing to match Newcastle’s reported €87m (£75m) asking price.
Asked whether Gordon has played his last game for Newcastle following the 2-0 loss at Fulham on Sunday, manager Eddie Howe said: “I don’t know. You can never predict what is going to happen. He obviously goes to the World Cup now so we wish him well.”
Gordon, who has been named in England’s 26-man squad for this summer’s World Cup, last played for Newcastle against Crystal Palace on 12 April, amid speculation linking him with a big-money move to Vincent Kompany’s Bayern.
Slot believes Liverpool must sign ‘at least one’ winger this summer
While Newcastle endured a difficult 2025-26 Premier League campaign, with Howe’s men finishing 12th in the table, fifth-placed Liverpool also recorded a disappointing season despite qualifying for the Champions League.
However, manager Slot believes Liverpool will bounce back next season provided they sign “at least one” winger when the summer transfer window opens next month.
Speaking after Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Brentford at Anfield on Sunday, the Dutchman said: “One of the reasons why everyone is talking about wingers is because Mo (Salah) is leaving. It makes complete sense to think about at least one [new winger].
“I think last season gives you the answer because of how important our wingers were to our success last season. They were scoring goals, providing goals, so they were a vital part of us winning the league last season and, in general in football, you see more and more focus on wingers.”
