Alphonse Areola’s wife Marrion Valette has launched a social media rant at West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo, blaming him for the Hammers’ Premier League relegation and her husband’s World Cup snub
The wife of West Ham United goalkeeper Alphonse Areola has unleashed a scathing attack on Hammers’ boss Nuno Espirito Santo via social media. The Irons were relegated from the Premier League on Sunday, despite securing a 3-0 victory over Leeds United.
Nuno’s side needed rivals Tottenham to lose to Everton but Roberto De Zerbi’s men won 1-0 thanks to a Joao Palhinha goal. It was a painful end to the season for Areola, who began as West Ham’s first-choice goalkeeper when Nuno took charge in mid-September 2025 following Graham Potter’s departure.
The French international, who started in West Ham’s Europa Conference League triumph in 2023, was benched for the run-in with his final league outing coming at Chelsea on January 31. Mads Hermansen, who signed last summer from Leicester, was restored as the starting goalkeeper.
Nuno has now faced the fury of Areola’s wife, Marrion Valette. Her initial post featured an image of the goalkeeper holding the Europa Conference League trophy, accompanied by the caption: “From a trophy to relegation. Thank you Potter for the start of the season and Nuno for the end.”
She also shared a screenshot of her ticket from West Ham’s Conference League final victory over Fiorentina, adding a broken-heart emoji. In a separate post, she showed her husband clutching two Premier League Save of the Month awards.
“Being dropped at the beginning of the season for no reason… After a very bad start then has made 20 games and all of a sudden “I’m really sorry you won’t start…” “Why?” “For no particular reason but I’m sorry.”” Marion wrote.
A further post highlighted how Areola boasts the highest save rate per 90 minutes in the Premier League, accompanied by the caption: “Very sad for the fans (with a hammers emoji) Very frustrated for the family but always proud of you no matter what.”
In separate posts, she showcased Areola alongside numerous trophies and accolades he has picked up throughout his career, along with three highlight reels of the goalkeeper in action for West Ham. The concluding story featured footage of Areola representing France, with Marrion adding underneath: “And NO World Cup this year thank you coach Nuno.”
The 33-year-old has been omitted from France’s squad for the forthcoming World Cup, despite previously featuring in Didier Deschamps’ selection for the last two World Cups and the 2024 European Championships.
Areola initially joined West Ham on loan in July 2021 from Paris Saint-Germain, before completing a permanent transfer twelve months later. Whether the goalkeeper will be afforded the opportunity to revive his West Ham career in the Championship, regardless of Nuno’s position, remains to be seen.
When pressed on what might come next, the Irons boss remained non-committal regarding his own future. “It’s not about me,” Nuno said. “We are in a tough place and West Ham has to go back in the Premier League. But now we have to go through this period of sadness, understanding the frustration and anger of the fans.”
When pressed on whether there were any discussions planned regarding his future at West Ham, he responded: “You keep insisting [to ask] me about that and my mind is not there, you understand? Today, tomorrow, if we have a press conference, next one, for sure we can speak about that. But today, it’s about understanding how tough it is.”
Nuno’s precarious position only compounds the turmoil currently engulfing the club. The Hammers posted a £104.2m loss in their most recent financial year, and their relegation will almost certainly trigger player sales, with captain Jarrod Bowen and midfielder Mateus Fernandes — who joined for £42million from Southampton just last summer — both tipped to depart.
