Tourist paralysed after horror fall from bridge during holiday to celebrate birthday

Nina Bakhshi says she fell from a bridge while on a trip to celebrate her birthday, suffering multiple fractures and leaving her with severe spinal and neck injuries.

A woman is facing a long road to recovery after a birthday getaway culminated in a catastrophic accident, leaving her with critical spinal and neck trauma.

Nina Bakhshi recounts tumbling from a bridge while on holiday with friends, sustaining numerous fractures in what swiftly became a life-or-death medical crisis.

Through a GoFundMe campaign established to help her rehabilitation, Nina detailed how the outing descended into chaos after her fall, with no immediate adequate medical support available on site.

She claimed emergency equipment was absent from the location and said she endured being carried for about 30 minutes before an ambulance that failed to materialise, according to creatorzine.com. Ultimately, she was reportedly ferried by lorry for about an hour to a medical facility, where she commenced receiving critical care.

Nina revealed she didn’t have travel insurance when the incident occurred, while a local insurance scheme associated with the park failed to provide coverage for the emergency operation she desperately needed. Her loved ones are understood to have mobilised instantly, scrambling to meet escalating hospital bills through combined resources, exhausting credit limits and borrowing money as her condition rapidly worsened.

Her operation was postponed until about 28 hours after the accident, which the fundraising page attributes partly to the incident taking place over a weekend and logistical complications in organising her care. Nina, originally from Los Angeles, subsequently shared an emotional update detailing the full extent of her injuries.

“It was the most painful and terrifying experience of my life, but thankfully the doctors were able to save my lower back, and I can move my legs now,” she said.

While she acknowledges she is fortunate to have survived, her road to recovery remains lengthy, with continuing complications and additional treatment still needed.

She added: “I still have untreated fractures in my neck, ongoing medical expenses, physical therapy, follow-up appointments, medications, and a long healing journey ahead. At this time, I am unable to walk normally or return to work.”

Nina also disclosed that she remains in Mexico while continuing her recuperation, revealing she is not yet fit enough to make the journey home.

“I have never been comfortable asking for help, but after everything that has happened, I truly cannot get through this alone. I’m stuck in Mexico hoping to feel better enough to get on a plane,” she said.

The GoFundMe page states that all donations will be directed towards continued medical care, rehabilitation, and reimbursing the support provided by loved ones throughout the emergency.
