Bahrain sentenced a man to life imprisonment after convicting him of espionage and collaboration with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Hezbollah, according to Bahraini judicial authorities.
The head of Bahrain’s Terrorism Crimes Prosecution said the High Criminal Court of Bahrain found the defendant guilty of collecting and transferring sensitive information to a foreign state with the intent of carrying out hostile and terrorist acts against the kingdom.
The court also convicted him of promoting and supporting hostile acts against Bahrain and ordered the confiscation of seized materials in addition to the life sentence.
According to the prosecution, investigations conducted by the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science concluded that Hezbollah had recruited the defendant after he allegedly sought to join the organisation.
Authorities said he was tasked with sending photos, videos and information related to the aftermath of Iranian attacks on Bahrain to electronic accounts allegedly managed from within Iran under the supervision of the Revolutionary Guard and Iranian intelligence agencies.
The prosecution stated that the defendant confessed during questioning and that forensic examinations of electronic devices supported the charges against him.
According to the official Bahrain News Agency, the case proceeded through multiple hearings during which the defendant was represented by legal counsel and granted what authorities described as full fair trial guarantees.
