West Ham forward Taty Castellanos may not have done enough to preserve his side’s Premier League status, but his stunning strike against Newcastle deserves recognition in its own right.
Introduced in the 26th minute, the Argentina international handed West Ham a glimmer of hope in the 69th with a breathtaking effort from 22 yards out.
Castellanos pounced on a long ball from goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, letting it bounce once before producing an audacious, acrobatic finish over Nick Pope after West Ham had fallen 3-0 behind.
The goal arrived in a must-win clash for West Ham, who sit 18th in the table and are teetering on the edge of relegation, with the strike ultimately proving too little, too late to inspire a comeback. West Ham lost the game 3-1.
Castellanos struck the bar soon after his earlier effort but was unable to reproduce that moment of magic, leaving Nuno Espirito Santo’s beleaguered side still short of even a point at St James’ Park.
If Tottenham manage to beat Chelsea on Tuesday, West Ham’s 14-year stay in the Premier League will come to an end.

The Hammers had threatened to mount a charge for survival after wins over the likes of Everton and Wolves, but they have lost three games in a row and now face relegation to the Championship.
They can still secure survival if they beat Everton on the final day, but that would only matter if Tottenham lose both of their remaining games.
Spurs’ goal difference is also minus nine, with West Ham’s minus 22.
Relegation will mark a stark decline for West Ham, who won the Conference League as recently as June 2023. Last year they finished 14th, and started this season in poor form under Graham Potter.
He was sacked, and Nuno Espirito Santo was appointed to try and save them. It looks, however, that it is too little, too late.
