Ethan Nwaneri will take the next step in his football career as the Arsenal loanee’s nightmare stint with Marseille to end
Marseille are due to play their final match of the Ligue 1 season against Stade Rennes on Sunday. Arsenal loanee Ethan Nwaneri will therefore see his time in France come to an end as his future again comes into focus.
The youngster has spent the second half of the campaign with OM but has endured a challenging period there. Marseille head coach Habib Beye had openly criticised the Gunners youngster regarding his application as an explanation for his lack of game time.
“He’s a quality player, but he has to give us way more in his day-to-day commitment,” Beye said. “Other players gave way more.”
The 19-year-old has two goals and one assists in nine Ligue 1 matches for Marseille, but has been an unused substitute in the last three league matches. The agreement will see Marseille pay more to Arsenal as a result of not playing Nwaneri.

“I think that’s the coach’s opinion, he’s with him every single day,” Mikel Arteta said when questioned about Beye’s comments. “He’s the one making the decision. He’s the one that sees and understands better what he’s doing, and Ethan has to respond to that in the right way.
“It’s the same place that William Saliba was there, same club. And the outcome, let’s see. Maybe it’s the best thing that can happen for Ethan, for his career. Maybe, we don’t know.”
The question is now whether he returns to Arsenal and remains, is loaned out again or even sold. The club are keen to improve their record regarding player sales with Andrea Berta, the sporting director, tasked with securing funds for any outgoing talent.
With Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze and perhaps most importantly Max Dowman at the club, the pathway for Nwaneri remains very congested. football.london understands Nwaneri came close to leaving last summer to Borussia Dortmund before a late U-turn and instead signing a new deal with the Gunners.
While it may not have panned out as Nwaneri would have expected following that decision, the benefit for Arsenal is they have retained value in the player and would hope to get a serious fee for the talented attacking midfielder were he to leave.
