Scottie Scheffler has labelled the pin positions at Aronimink Golf Club as âabsurdâ after clinging to contention on a day of carnage at the PGA Championship.
The world No 1 carded four bogeys in a second-round 71 to slip to two under par, having faced gusts in excess of 30mph in Philadelphia.
The conditions were especially tough for the early starters, which included Scheffler, who offered a damning assessment of the flag placements on the severely sloped greens.
âYou have just got to continue to try to hit good shots, and most of the pins today were, I mean, kind of absurd,â he said.Â
âThey were just so far into the areas where we thought the pins were going to be. The one on 14 was probably the hardest pin that Iâve seen in a long time.
âI mean, thereâs literally just like a spine and theyâre like, âOh, weâll just put the pin right on top of itâ. And youâre like, âAll right, well, Iâll see what I can doâ. Challenging.â

Scheffler clarified that he did not believe the course was âunfairâ, but added: âThis is the hardest set of pin locations that Iâve seen since Iâve been on Tour, and that includes US Opens, that includes Oakmont.
âI asked Fooch (Mark Fulcher), who caddies for Justin Rose, and I asked Teddy (Scott, Schefflerâs caddie) if they have seen anything like this before. They said maybe Shinnecock is the only place they have seen that has pins that could compare to this.
âBut itâs different in a sense on this golf course, because Oakmont, their greens are extremely severe, but theyâre extremely severe in one direction. Here, itâs like the green may slope all this way and then we put the pin down here and then thereâs also a slope this way.
âItâs not natural to the slopes that are there. Itâs just very difficult.â
